Sayville High Alumni Spotlight; Margaret Pauline “Maggie” Tucker, class of 1909.

Margaret (who went by Maggie) was born Nov. 22, 1893 in West Sayville. Maggie’s parents, John and Jannetje Tucker, were a prominent family in West Sayville.

Maggie Tucker’s obituary appeared in the Suffolk County News on June 15, 1972. She died the Saturday before publication, June 10, 1972. The obituary states she attended Sayville schools and then went on to become a nurse.

Maggie’s academic accomplishments are noted in the SCN articles on regents examinations in 1907, 1908 and 1909. It is likely she graduated High School in 1909, however a complete class roster has not been located and a graduation exercises article in the SCN did not list the class roster.

Maggie is listed in the 1920, 1930 and 1940’s census as a nurse living in Manhattan.

When I logged in yesterday ( and it has been while since I visited the site), I saw my Great Aunt Mag’s obituary from the Suffolk County News. Aunt Mag was my Grandmother’s sister. Whilamina who I never met as she passed away when my father was 5 years old. My Mom and I often visited the Tuckers in West Sayville when I was a child…visiting with Aunt Mag who was a nurse,, Aunt Mick a telephone operator, Uncle John and Uncle Len who were oystermen on Great South Bay. Uncle Len was also known for his sculptures of birds and decoys. We also spent time with Aunt Effie and her son Hab, who lived in Patchogue. They all loved having company and enjoyed reminiscing about their family. I have missed them immensely.
